Artist Kirsti Taiviola’s concrete sculpture Vormu was unveiled at Karhula market square in Kotka on Monday, 22 September 2025.
Inspired by Karhula’s industrial heritage and glassmaking tradition, the sculpture resembles a mould once used in the production of milk bottles. Its bluish-green tone reflects the colour of vintage bottle glass.
The piece was developed in collaboration with local residents. Taiviola interviewed Karhula locals in spring 2025, gathering personal stories related to everyday objects. Selected quotes appear as relief text on the sides of the sculpture, highlighting the connection between memory, place, and material.
The City of Kotka will continue its collaboration with Taiviola through a new glass and light-based artwork to be installed at the Karhula school centre, set to open in 2027. The public art projects in Karhula have been supported by the Arts Promotion Centre Finland and the City of Kotka.
